Programs & Services

NASDA Honor Award Program - Since 1972, NASDA has conducted its annual honor awards program for employees of the state departments of agriculture. It has become an important part of our annual meeting program and gives recognition to outstanding professionals who work for NASDA members.

NASDA-NASS Cooperative Program - Since 1978, NASDA and the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) have continuously operated a cooperative program for agricultural data collection in 49 states.  The program's objective is to serve the United States, its agricultural producers, and rural communities by providing meaningful, accurate and objective statistical information and services.  Under the cooperative agreement, NASDA employs over 3,500 part-time statistical enumerators who collect and supply to NASS statistical data from both on-farm and telephone surveys with farm and ranch operators.  For the 2005-06 fiscal year, the total budget for NASDA's share of the program was $28 million.  Four members of NASDA's Washington staff spend significant time working various aspects of the NASS program.

Model Food Emergency Plans - The template will provide states with a guide for developing a food emergency response plan. It is designed to assist the states with development of either a stand-alone plan for responding to a food-related emergency or an addendum to an existing all-hazard state emergency response plan. Because a food emergency could occur at any point from farm to fork, including pre-harvest production, processing, and distribution, the application of this template allows for management of emergencies with varying degrees and scope. A food-related emergency involves the unintentional or deliberate contamination, threatened or actual, of food that impacts or may impact human health. A food emergency response plan does not apply to food incidents routinely handled by local or state health departments.

Inspection Programs - The Agricultural Quality Inspection Service (AQIS) is a not-for-profit organization that was created in 1997.  It specifically works to achieve agreements and compliances such as the Agricultural Marketing Service Peanut Quality Assurance Agreement, the Maine Quality Assurance Agreement, and the Environmental Policy & Compliance Assistance in Massachusetts

Tri-National Agricultural Accord - NASDA members continue to build relationships with Mexico's state secretaries of agriculture and rural development and Canada's provincial ministers of agriculture to identify opportunities to resolve trade-related issues in the NAFTA countries.

Research Foundation - The NASDA Research Foundation was created in 1981 and provides agriculturally-oriented research, education, and training.  Current research projects include Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMPs), CNMP Watch, Pesticide Safety Program, and the FSIS Homeland Security Project.

  • CNMP Watch:   CNMP Watch is the complete Web source for manure and nutrient management planning information. It is designed to get you started and assist you with helping livestock producers prepare their nutrient management plans in the many forms they might take. This website emphasizes nutrient management planning and the plans that a livestock producer might need to meet a state or federal water quality regulatory requirement.
  • Pesticide Safety Programs: A Cooperative Agreement with the US EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs, awarded through an EPA competitive funding process. Pesticide Worker Safety Programs (education, outreach, and regulatory process) are needed to reduce risks of pesticide poisonings and injuries in human communities, including those disproportionately impacted by environmental burdens, while recognizing the importance of the appropriate and competent use of pesticides. Certification of Applicators (40CFR171), the Worker Protection Standard (40CFR170), Container Containment (40CFR165) and a trained health care provider community are cornerstone tools for realizing reduced pesticide risks.
