House Panel Reviews Rural Development Programs
News Date April 03, 2006
The House Agriculture Subcommittee on Rural Development held a hearing on March 30 to review USDA's rural development programs. The main focus of the hearing was on the ability of biofuel production to stimulate growth in rural areas.
Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) suggested that increased demand for ethanol and other biofuels would spur rural development through the building of production plants where the crops are grown. Lawmakers also discussed expansion of broadband Internet access in rural areas. They pointed out the benefits that increased Internet access will allow rural residents to be more productive. Witnesses at the hearing included USDA officials, state and local government organizations, and community development groups. In addition, testimony was provided by Cheryl L. Cook, deputy secretary for marketing and economic development, of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. (Contact: Jeri-Ann Henry or Clay Francis)
