Mixed Messages on TPP Following President’s Asia Trip

President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ended talks in Tokyo last week without reaching agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, though administration officials including U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said negotiators did make progress on agriculture and automobile market access issues with Japan. Japanese officials meanwhile have said that there was no concrete agreement reached during the negotiations.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said this week in an interview with Bloomberg that if the market access issues with Japan are not resolved, the TPP may mave to move forward without Japan.
