USDA Partially Deregulates Genetically Engineered Sugar Beets

News Date: 02/08/2011

Last Friday, USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) decided to partially deregulate Monsanto's Roundup Ready sugar beets, meaning that producers will be able to plant the genetically engineered crop in 2011; however, growers will have to follow mandatory requirements for how the crop can be grown.

A coalition of environmental groups has indicated they will take legal action.  The final decision on whether to fully deregulate Roundup Ready sugar beets will not come until a full Environmental Impact Study (EIS) has been completed.  For more information, click here. (Contact: Bob Ehart)
