Accessing PDF-format documents using the Adobe Reader

These documents are available to be downloaded to your computer in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. Please be sure to set your "Load File" option to "Load to Disk" or to have the Adobe Acrobat reader installed in your WWW browser.

The Acrobat Reader allows anyone to view, navigate, and print documents in the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).

Acrobat Reader is available on-line from the following source and is free and freely distributable. Adobe maintains both an FTP site (ftp.adobe.com) and a World Wide Web home page (http://www.adobe.com/). After the Reader has been installed, run the .exe file just as any other software application. The Reader than becomes a separate program and can be used at any time.

You will have the option to save the file or open the Reader program to view the file (this option does not save the file to your system). To save, simply choose where the file is to be saved to and push Enter. To use the Reader to view the document without saving it, select "Pick App[lication" and choose where the program is found (ex. c:\adobe\AcroRd32.exe).

To open a PDF document, choose File > Open. In the Open File dialog box, highlight the filename, and click Open. Normally a PDF document has the extension .pdf. In Windows, or on the Macintosh, you can also open a PDF document by double-clicking the file icon.

Reading PDF on the Web
Each document or other resource on the Web is identified by a unique uniform resource locator (URL) address. Clicking a URL link to a PDF document on the Web can open the document identified by the URL in your Web browser for inline viewing, or in Acrobat Reader if the Reader has been set up as a helper application for your browser. You can also read PDF files that have been embedded in HTML documents on the Web.

To set up the Reader as a helper application, go to Options on the Netscape toolbar. Choose General Preferences and then Helpers. There will be a list of applications and file extension names. Look for application/pdf. In the Action section, choose Lanch the Application, hit browse, and choose the application file (ex. c:\adobe\AcroRd32.exe>. Click on OK and return to the Netscape screen.
