History: Farming is deeply rooted in Colorado's history, and in the personal values and respect for nature held by generations of Coloradans. Organic farming has played an increasingly important role in the overall agricultural development of the state in the last decade. Coupled with the growth and credibility of organic farming, there has been the need for a certification system that maintains and warrants the integrity of agricultural commodities and crops that are produced and marketed as "organic" through various distribution channels.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) has become known throughout the nation as a leading organization associated with the growth, development, and certification of organic farming over the last decade. Many private and public agencies and organizations have emerged to address the certification challenge, and CDA is proud to have established itself as one of the first public certification agencies in the United States.
