History: The State of Wyoming is aggressively marketing a growing selection of organic products both domestically and internationally. Although the state does not offer certification services, Wyoming actively promotes organic agriculture to its producers and processors.

The primary organic crop in Wyoming is winter wheat, which is produced in the southeast region of the state. Other organic small grains produced include millet and flax. Alfalfa is Wyoming's leading conventional crop, but some producers are also raising organic alfalfa for organic dairies. Over the next few years, organic crop production is expected to increase. More farmers that produce small grains, especially wheat, are expected to make the transition to organic production.

Livestock production is a significant industry in Wyoming. Currently there are a few organic cattle and sheep operations within the state, and most depend on direct marketing for their sales. Growth projections for the organic meat sector over the next few years are encouraging and organic livestock production is also expected to grow to meet this opportunity.

Organic vegetables, poultry, eggs, dairy, and herbal products have fairly well established niche markets already but some growth is expected as more Wyoming consumers become aware of locally grown, organic products available to them. The processed organic food industry is quite small at present, but further development is expected; Wyoming's processed organic foods include coffee and tea.
