The Kansas Department of Agriculture is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Animal Health Commissioner.

The Animal Health Commissioner is responsible for overall administration of the Division of Animal Health operations within the Kansas Department of Agriculture and accomplishment of the division objectives and goals.The Commissioner provides leadership to staff and acts as primary liaison to industry groups as well as the Kansas Legislature and other state, federal and international governmental agencies.


The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in animal science or related agriculture curriculum along with a master’s degree in public health and/or be a licensed, accredited veterinarian. The candidate will have no less than five years of experience in animal agriculture with involvement in veterinary medicine. Knowledge of disease control and eradication programs is strongly preferred along excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking. Knowledge of Kansas laws, regulations and the legislative process is a plus. Experience with the leadership and administration of multiple programs and an ability to plan, organize, coordinate, review and evaluate the operation of the Animal Health Division. Experience in supervising professional and paraprofessional staff directly and through others is important as well as being able to maintain satisfactory relationships with employees and the general public. The best candidate will demonstrate sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions and be able to express concepts clearly and logically. The ability to understand, interpret, explain and enforce regulations and policies is critical. The Commissioner needs the ability to be on call and travel as necessary.
