While Alabama was known as the Cotton State since the mid 1860s, Alabama agriculture has become incredibly diversified. Over 80 percent of Alabama's production is in livestock and livestock products, ranking thirteenth nationwide. Poultry and eggs account for 65 percent of total Ag sales, cattle and calves for 11 percent, nursery and greenhouse crops for eight percent, and cotton for only four percent.
