Exports are important to the continued strength of American agriculture. The value of US food and farm products exported in 2016 was $135 billion, with over twenty percent of US agricultural product exported. Based on a US Department of Agriculture estimate, for every $1 of food and agricultural exports, another $1.27 is generated in business activity. While U. S. agricultural producers depend heavily on their access to export markets the U.S. economy as a whole is equally dependent on the export of U.S. agricultural goods, with approximately one million American jobs dependant upon these exports. Agriculture is one of the few economic sectors in the U.S. to consistently run a positive balance of trade.
