My experience this summer serving as the public policy intern for NASDA in Washington, D.C. was nothing short of a dream. From growing up on a small row crop operation in Indiana to pursuing agricultural science at Oklahoma State University, one thing has remained consistent: my passion for agriculture is everlasting. My time with NASDA allowed me to view agriculture from the lens of the state departments of agriculture to help accomplish goals that serve our industry from coast to coast.

Throughout the summer, NASDA provided a wide range of experiences that grew my understanding of the breadth of policy areas that touch agriculture. In meetings with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and  U.S. Department of Labor, I learned about the vital nature of cooperative federalism in serving the agriculture industry across the country. Additionally, I joined a meeting with the deputy minister of agriculture from Vietnam which grew my perspective of international relations in agriculture. Each of these meetings were unique in topics discussed, but they all embodied the "United We Thrive" mission.

My time at NASDA also included professional development opportunities. With guidance from the policy team, I was able to conduct legislative and policy research to deliver objective data and key takeaways for drafting letters and recommendations. This task allowed me to grow in communicating with others to clearly define the goal as well as grow my analytical skills. The team at NASDA embraces collaboration and having the opportunity to learn from them has been invaluable.

Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to the team at NASDA for welcoming me with open arms. I am leaving our nation's capital with a grateful heart and inspiration to continue serving the industry that feeds, fuels and clothes the world.
