Tina Kotek in October 2023. She was deputy director of the agency from 2005 to 2021 before leaving to lead the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB). As ODA Director, Charpilloz Hanson oversees nearly 500 employees and has a two-year budget of approximately $165 million.
Charpilloz Hanson’s roots in agriculture run deep. She grew up on a farm in Monitor, Oregon, where her family grew various crops and held jobs off the farm. She spent her childhood working on nearby farms picking berries and planting beans, participating in FFA, and found her passion in showing livestock. This personal connection to agriculture is a driving force in her career.
Upon graduating from Oregon State University, Charpilloz Hanson worked with Green Giant. She also worked with the Washington AgForestry Leadership Program, a non-profit based in Spokane that helps farmers and foresters develop public policy and political advocacy skills. She then joined ODA in 1996 as the Commodity Commission manager and worked up the ranks over the next two decades.
Service to her community has always been a cornerstone of Charpilloz Hanson’s personal and professional life. Her commitment is a source of inspiration, and she is recognized nationally for her accomplishments and leadership, including the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture James Graham Outstanding Service to Agriculture Award in September 2018.
Charpilloz Hanson and her family live on a farm in rural Clackamas County, and she continues to show award-winning Hampshire and Southdown sheep.
