Hugh Weathers of Bowman was appointed Commissioner of Agriculture in September 2004 and was first elected to a four-year term as Commissioner in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. Commissioner Weathers is a fourth generation farmer. He and his brother, Landy, own and operate Weathers Farms, a dairy operation and Weathers Trucking, a bulk milk delivery service. He is also a partner with Circle W. Farms, a row crop operation growing corn, peanuts, and hay. Commissioner Weathers graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina with Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Finance. He is married to Blanche Gramling, who grew up on her father’s peach farm in Upstate South Carolina. They have three sons, Gil, Edward, and Julius. Commissioner Weathers has served on numerous local, state and national agricultural and business committees and boards including the United Dairy Industry Association, the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, the American Dairy Association of South Carolina, the South Carolina Dairy Association, the South Carolina Farm Bureau Legislative Committee and Political Action Committee, the South Carolina Conservation Bank, the AgSouth Farm Credit, and the Greater Bowman Business Development Council. Commissioner Weathers was inducted into the South Carolina Dairy Hall of Fame in 2011. He has served as President of the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) and of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (SASDA). He also serves as a board member of the South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development.
