The mission of the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food is to promote agriculture in the public interest and to serve farmers and consumers in the marketplace. The department assures safe and healthy food supplies, provides accurate information on prices and availability of farm commodities and crops and develops markets for the state's farmers.

The department has had many significant achievements but probably foremost would be eradication of major diseases of livestock and poultry through aggressive programs of surveillance and, where necessary, condemnation. New Hampshire was the first state to completely stamp out Brucellosis in cattle and led the nation in control of various other costly diseases.

Greenhouse and nursery products and milk and dairy products are New Hampshire's most important commodities. These categories add up to almost 2/3 of the state's total agricultural production, in cash receipts. Apples, vegetables and sweet corn, and maple products round out New Hampshire's top crops. Top livestock categories, after dairy, are poultry, cattle and calves, and other livestock.

There are some 4,400 individual farm operations in New Hampshire, of all sizes, managing over 470,000 acres.
