Background
The Tri-National Agricultural Accord represents a longstanding commitment among the senior state and provincial agricultural officials of Canada, the United States, and Mexico to work together collaboratively on agricultural trade and rural development issues. The current arrangement is rooted in a U.S. – Canada exchange dating from 1984. When efforts to expand the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement to create a North American Free Trade Agreement got underway in the early 1990s, it was decided to invite Mexico to participate in the Accord arrangement. The first trilateral Accord meeting took place in Puerto Vallarta in 1992. Since that year, an annual accord has rotated among the three countries.
Today, The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement offers significant opportunities for expanded trade in agricultural products throughout the North American Market, as well as the potential for leveraging North American competitiveness in the global market. Our trade agreements require constant vigilance to secure these promised benefits. USMCA, like its predecessor agreement (NAFTA), establish a robust consultative mechanism where federal trade officials receive input directly from state and provincial agricultural leaders. This consultative process occurs each year through an assembly of state and provincial leaders meeting as delegates to the Tri-National Agricultural Accord.
